Long-time defensive coordinator Lee Price has taken over as head football coach at Eastlake High.

John McFadden, one of the most-successful high school coaches in San Diego County, stepped down as head coach at the start of the summer.

Price, 48, has been on the Eastlake staff since 2000.

“I hope this is an easy transition,” Price said. “There are a lot more things to deal with as a head coach, but all our coaches are back, so that will help.”

McFadden will continue to coach at Eastlake, running the JV offense.

“John built this program, a program we’re all proud of,” Price said. “We hope to continue the tradition.

“John will still be around, but he was tired, tired of being a head coach with all the responsibility.”

McFadden, 48, posted a 122-41-3 with the Titans – a 74.8 winning percentage. He was 93-28-3 over the last 10 years, a 76.8 winning percentage.

McFadden’s Titans beat Mission Hills 21-14 in 2012 to win the CIF San Diego Section Division I championship.

Price, who played at Hilltop High and graduated from UC San Diego, started his coaching career in 1984 at Bonita Vista. He has also coached at Mar Vista, Ramona and Coronado. He was the head coach at Coronado in 1992.

He will still call the defense for the Titans, who allowed just 138 points in 12 games last season with shutouts of St. Augustine, Chula Vista, Bonita Vista and Olympian. In one seven-game stretch, the Eastlake defense allowed just 28 points.

Eastlake opens the 2014 season at home on Aug. 29, hosting Desert Ridge of Mesa, Arizona. The Titans return quarterback Izzak Morales as well as 1,273-yard running back Isaiah Strayhorn and a number of good running backs and wings.
