Titans News · Eastlake ground game wears down Oceanside

By Oscar Terrones

Eastlake’s home crowd erupted with “We want Helix!” chants in the final minutes of the Titans’ 29-7 win Friday night over Oceanside in the quarterfinals of the San Diego Section Division I playoffs.

The Titans (10-1) will move on to face Helix in next week’s semifinals after throttling the Pirates (6-6) in what ended up being a chippy game.

Eastlake used its run game to tire out Oceanside’s defense, allowing QB Richard Colmenero III to make plays downfield.

In the second quarter, Colmenero hit WR Darius De Los Reyes for a 70-yard bomb over the Pirates’ secondary. It was De Los Reyes’ second touchdown of the game after scoring Eastlake’s first TD on a 2-yard run.

The Pirates had the makings of a potential upset with speedy playmakers Kavika Tua and Dylan York, but it never came together. Safety Eric Russell scored Oceanside’s lone TD after recovering an Eastlake fumbled punt attempt in the Titans’ own end zone.

Oceanside coach David Rodriguez lamented the missed opportunities.

“We have to learn from our mistakes,” Rodriguez said. “The mistake is not learning from your mistakes. There were some things that unfortunately kept creeping in at different times. There’s no rest for the wicked in the Avocado League. We have to deserve success and unfortunately we didn’t deserve it tonight.”
