Eastlake goalkeeper sets water polo career record for saves & UT Athlete of the Month

Titans senior James Derrod ranks first in the San Diego Section

Derrod did it with seven saves in a 12-10 loss at Grossmont for an all-time total of 1,051, two more than the old mark established by Monte Vista’s Gavin Glaser (1995-98).

“I’m just really excited,” said Derrod, who opened the season with 993 saves over three varsity seasons. “It’s been a long time in the making, and I’m glad to have something set in the record book. I’m hoping that it will stay there a long time.”

Derrod’s older sister, Haley, set the section girls record that remained until last year with 920 saves at Eastlake from 2009-13. The record now belongs to Valhalla’s Zoe Johnson (1,036), currently competing at Santa Barbara City College.
